Thank Goodness for Vicodin
We got 11 eggs at retrieval this morning. I'll get the call sometime tomorrow letting me know how many were mature and how many fertilized. I'm hoping to get enough to be able to go to blast again, but who really knows. I was in quite a bit of pain by the time I got home, so I popped a Vicodin and took a nap. I don't know what I would do without pain meds.
I spoke to my vet this afternoon about the treatment options for Dixie. We decided to start with meds. I had been leaning toward the radioactive iodine treatment, but there's one major problem with that. I want to get her started on treatment ASAP, but that would mean bringing a radioactive cat into my house during the 2ww. They keep them at the kitty hospital until they're at a safe level, but they're still emitting radiation when they come home. I've read some about it, and it's not a good idea to do during pregnancy. I seriously doubt I'll actually get pregnant this cycle. It's not like I've got a stellar track record, but I can't risk it. We've been through too much to get to this point. I did find out that the thyroid medication is available in a transdermal lotion that you can just apply to the ear. That's what we've decided to try first, since Dixie cannot stand to take pills. If she doesn't tolerate the meds then we can always do the radioactive iodine treatment at a later date. I think this is a good starting point, though, given her age and my 2ww situation.

Congratulations on 11 eggs! That's great news -- my fingers are crossed for a good fertilization report.
I'm glad you have a good treatment plan for your kitty, too.
Congrats on the eggs!
Crossing my fingers for the fertilization report!
I think your kitty plan seems like a good one. I hope she does well.
Don't know that I will,
But until,
I can find me,
A girl who'll stay,
And won't play,
Games behind me,
I'll be what I am,
A Solitary Man
Congrats on the 11 eggs! Best of luck with the fertilization (though I know its out of your control). Am crossing my fingers for you.
And the plan for Dixie sounds like a good one. I hope she's feeling better soon.
That is great news. I hope you are feeling better.
Vicodin is good, v v good.
Take care.
11 eggs! Fantastic!! I hope you are feeling ok. Good idea on the kitty plan too. :)

So glad to hear your number!!! And yay for Vicodin!
Thinking lots of good thoughts for you this cycle!
Good luck with the transfer.
I have more experience with the thyroid thing.
The price you quoted seems pretty high. check out the veterinary school in your state. Would that be Texas Tech? I dunno. Also, when I checked the university in my state, they kept the cats for a month. Perhaps you could arrange a longer stay?
I had my cat done a few years ago at the BJ Brown Memorial Cat clinic in Cary, NC, which is close to Raleigh. It was about $700. They are a private clinic, and they beat the price I got from Virginia Tech. But it wasn't price alone...I was very impressed with them and they have a loving attitude toward cats in general. They didn't have any qualms about treating a 13 year old cat. I know they go in and play with the cats and treat them very well.
While I was there, I met cat who had had it when he was 15! He was bounding around the clinic. The results are amazing. I guess the cats feel bad while they have it. I'd do it again, because she had 5 great years after that.
They will also take cats off planes. If you could get a cheap flight there, or you have a relative there, it's a thought.
Congrats on the 11 eggs!
Sounds like your kitty-cat is in good hands. . .
Alright!! Eleven eggs! Good job. Take it easy today and I will be checking like crazy tomorrow to see what the fert rate is.
So sorry to hear about Dixie and also about how you can't do the iodine treatment - I never knew there was such a thing. Good luck with the thyroid treatment patch.
Thanks everyone!
Anonymous, Thanks for the info. The $1500 may be high, but that's what happens when you live in a big city. There's only one place that will do the radiactive iodine treatment in Houston, and that's what they charge. There is a veterinary school at Texas A&M, but honestly this is not about the $. I want what's best and easiest for Dixie. She's 16.5 and pretty frail. I don't want her to have to travel, and I sure couldn't see putting her on a plane. If she was a younger cat in better health it would be a different situation all together. And the thought of having my kitty be away from home for a month is too much to bear. Not only would it break my heart, but I'm sure it would break hers, too. She may only have months to live anyway, so having her spend that much time away from home would not be good.
We're going to start out with the meds, but if she has any problems with them or doesn't respond well, we will definitely be looking toward the radioactive idodine treatment. Thanks for your thoughts.
11 eggs is fantastic! Good job.
Hang in there.

11 is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
Waiting for the next report...

I dropped my cat off for Radiation Iodine Treatment yesterday, April 5th, in Middletown, CT. The cost was $1250 plus x-rays. I have thoroughly researched this and I am convinced it is the best way to go, although I do understand why you would choose the transdermal cream for now. There is a great yahoo group for more information called Feline Hyper-T. It sure helped me. Good luck on all counts! - Sharon
Sharon- I don't know if you'll come back and read this, but we did end up doing the radioactive iodine treatment for Dixie, and she's doing great. If you go to my new blog: http://www.mananabanana.brainwidth.net and click on the "my furry children" category, you can read all about it. Good luck with the treatment for your kitty.
